What is Aquaponics?
Aquaponics is a system that combines hydroponics (growing plants in water) and fish farming. Fish naturally excrete waste and breathe out amonia, which is harmful to them. However, these chemicals are pumped to the water containing the plants, and bacteria break down amonia into nitrites, which are converted into nitrates. The plants roots take in nitrates, filtering all harmful chemicals out of the water. This clean, pure water is pumped back to the fish, forming a natural filter system.
